Creative Snacks

May 20, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Where / When

  • Owen Street, Huskisson. Saturday 20th May 2017, 6-9pm as part of The Huskisson Food Network & Company’s event that weekend.
  • As in the ‘Seefood’ event that made a vibrant contribution to the opening of Seechange 2016, restaurants in Huskisson will be offering special menus for sit down dining and there will be a pop-up market for street vendors.

What is Creative Snacks

  • This is a playful, interactive performance piece drawing on the concept of ‘food for thought’. It is an adaptation of works Natalie has staged at intervals over the last seven years at conferences and other events.
  • It requires about seven performers who Natalie will train and guide.
  • The performers wear distinctive hats and aprons and carry a tray of artistic goodies – small artworks, images, sculptures, hand made objects etc. donated/loaned by JBBArts members.
  • The performers rove amongst people who are milling about on the street; they invite one or two people standing together to each choose something from the tray that they find aesthetically pleasing or intriguing.
  • Following a set of simple protocols the performer facilitates a conversation exploring: what each person finds aesthetically pleasing and why; ideas about the purpose of art; the practice of the artist who made the piece they have chosen; etc.
  • People could be offered the option to buy the item they have chosen (tbc)
  • The interaction provides ‘creative snacks’ to engage and stimulate the mind (as well as the body) of people at the food event and stimulates interest in JBBArts and its activities, which would form part of the conversation.

About 7 volunteer performers who are provided with costumes, props and training, and are willing/able to:

  • Good naturedly don an apron, a silly hat and a tray of artistic/aesthetic goodies
  • Comfortably circulate amongst people on the street
  • Follow a set of simple protocols on how to approach and engage people into a shared experience (become co-performers)
  • Be present to what happens in the moment
  • Be able to listen
  • Stand and walk about for 3 hours

Total time commitment 6 hours: 3 hours training + 3 hours performing

Ideally the trays of ‘creative snacks’ offered by the performers will be filled with small-scale pieces of art and other material related to artistic practice that are donated by JBBArts members for use in the performance.

  • Donated items can take any form e.g: hand sized sculptures; found objects and images that interest you (accompanied with a short statement about why); photograph(s) of your large scale works; fragments of textiles or paintings; photocopied pages from your sketch books; poems; collages; a letter to a person who may be at the event, and so on – anything that connects to your artistic production.
  • This can be material you already have or you create for this purpose.
  • The artist who has donated the item will be identified and promoted.
  • Single items or multiples (1 per tray = 7) are welcome
  • Each tray measures: 38x29x8 cm
  • Size of pieces should be no bigger than 10x10x10cm
  • Members of the public participating in the performance will be invited to take away their chosen item and make a cash donation that will go to JBBArts.

Any items you can donate to the cause are much appreciated. These need to be delivered no later than Wednesday 17th May to Natalie in Erowal Bay.

Please contact Natalie and notify her of your intention to donate phone 0414 524 266 or email natalie@mcdonaghdesign.com
