Gunyah Restaurant 44417299
Paperbark Camp, Woollamia Rd Huskisson
Mon June 14, 12.30pm for 1pm
Philip Bailey first heard Yehudi and Hephzibah Menuhin in 1951 when, as a reluctant eight-year-old, he was taken to a recital at Sydney Town Hall. This most famous duo of sonata players opened a new world of music to him and changed his life. 25 years later Philipmet Yehudi by chance in Switzerland and they began a discussion about electric cars. Philip soon found himself on the Menuhin staff in London and toured the world as the classical musician's equivalent of a "roadie" for the next two decades, enabling him to observe the Menuhin family at close quarters. After Yehudi's death in 1999 Philip returned to Australia and began writing a two-volume Menuhin biography, a project that has taken ten years to complete. Philip's presentation at the lunch will include a short film clip, amusing musical anecdotes, advice for would-be biographers, and a rare recording of Yehudi Menuhin playing during a wartime BBC broadcast.
